TVR Tuscan which is now for sale ...

Following on from my previous blog about my brothers new toy . This is about his outgoing one . The TVR Tuscan . This model has had a full engine rebuild and a straight through stainless exhaust system fitted . It makes lots of popping noises on the overun , which puts a smile on your face , even as a passenger !!! And it also makes people aware that you are coming , so that the don't step out onto the road . If they did , they would either have to be stupid or deaf .

He had had several models of TVR prior to getting this one . And i have been in all of them . I can say that this is by far my favorite . It is very quirky in many ways . For instance , you have a button to press under the door mirror to open the door !! This also drops the window a few inches , to allow the door to open . Even quirkier is that you have to push a button next to the stereo unit to open the doors to get out . I felt a right idiot looking for the door handle , only to see big brother push a shiny button and the door pops open . You can remove the roof ( not unusual ) you can also remove the rear window as well !! I know in a Land Rover you can remove the front screen on older models . But that just fills your teeth with dead flies !!! He did find to his dismay that the rear window decided to pop out all of it's own doing , while driving along the road !!! And yes , it smashed into small bits :-(

One thing that TVR's need is a good engine rebuild after a certain mileage . When he purchased this one . He was told by the owner that the engine had had a rebuild and was spot on . Never take someone who is selling a vehicle by their word !!! He was a lying so and so and the engine was showing signs of oil leaks and other issues . Big brother decided to take the plunge and spend a good few thousand pound and get the engine stripped and rebuilt . But this time to a higher BHP and with much stronger internal parts than had been fitted at the factory . If you know a bit about these vehicles it's a known fact on the earlier models they used parts from many other vehicles to finish off the cars . For example , Ford Cortina , Ford Granada switches , wiper motors, electric window motors etc !! You would have to enter your chassis number into the system to see which vehicles they had bastardised on the Friday afternoon that your one had been built .

This is the main spec of the car after it had it's engine tweeks and a few other bits -
Rebored to  4.3 litre, 430bhp, 397lb/ft of torque which is more than standard 4.0 litre, 360bhp, 310 lb/ft. TVR's figures were always optimistic and probably gained from an engine on the test bench without an alternator, water pump etc and achieved right before it went pop. These  figures are from a dyno so accurate.

The car weighs in at 1050kg giving a power to weight ratio of 410bhp/tonne and if  he  didn't love his (upgraded, racing) clutch, 0-60 of around 3.5 seconds. For the rebuild the engine was bored out and fitted with new liners. Pistons, rods, crank....all moving parts were replaced with better quality items as were the injectors (originals couldn't provide enough fuel) and the ECU remapped. Suspension upgraded. Catalytic convertors removed and silencers sleeved to give straight through flow. Pop, bang burble burble.

When i went to assist with moving his new aeroplane , he took me out for a wee spin ;-0 And to get some photos for him to advertise this beast for sale . We were lucky that the evening sun was amazing but we couldn't find a good vantage point to make use of the warm evening sun . However we did find the edge of a nice cornfield that had recently been harvested . And as luck would have it the warm light wasn't to bad for taking the pics .

Below are some images of the car . Yes i have photoshoped them and more than i would normally . But i am just playing with the Dodge and Burn tools and am quite liking the results .

The quirky interior . All the brass coloured knobs and dials you see are not marked as to what they do . So as a new owner it's part of the fun , finding out what's what .

Couple at bottom are the same image with different  tweaks . The lower one is slightly de-daturated .Which i think works quite well on this .

If you are interested in purchasing something that will put a smile on your face have a look here for more details of the sale .

Hope you have enjoyed reading this blog .

My brothers new toy .....

Out of my three brothers , one has never really grown up !!! He was always buying kit cars , painting his motorbikes outrageous colours and generally being a big kid :-)

As he got older his toys have grown in size and power . He went from a mundane Ford to an outrageous TVR !! His first TVR was a Griffith . And i remember my mum and dads reaction when they first heard it . ' Think your exhaust needs fixing son , as i can't hear myself think with the noise that's coming from it ' !!!
'No mum , it's supposed to sound like that '
Which it was , due to the straight through stainless exhaust system !!

He then went on to various other TVR's , ending up with his current one . Which is a wonderful Tuscan . I will be doing a short blog about this particular one shortly .

Move on several years later .He still has a clean driving licence and the car is still in one piece . His two daughters have grown up and one is fast approaching her seventeenth birthday . And you guessed it , she wants her own car . As do most seventeen year olds . She has done loads of research . Got a spread sheet up and running , showing the various driving schools near her , a short list of cars that she would like and look cool in !! She has also found out via the wonders of the web that if she has a Black Box fitted in the car , it will bring down her insurance by a big chunk . The only issue being , how to fund the lessons , purchase of a car and the insurance ??

All the above has had my brother thinking when he was in between flying . Yes , he is a pilot for his day job . So you can again see how he really hasn't grown up , as although this is his job and livelihood , it's also another BIG toy , really . He said to myself that he was thinking of selling the car to fund a car for my niece . Which i thought was very good of him , as i know how much he loves his car . And how much time and money he has put into it to get it to be one of the best Tuscans on the road . But i could sense that he had a plan that involved something a bit special for him ;-)

A short while after this chat , we sadly lost our wonderful dad . He passed away peacefully but it was still a big shock to us all . Mum needed us all there to support her and help her out with the daily and weekly things that good old dad had always done . Like taking her shopping on a Saturday .
The week after loosing dad . Myself , my wife and my brother were in the supermarket putting things in mums trolley that she didn't want or need !! You see , none of her boys have ever really grown up .
My brother kept sneaking off and making phone calls . Then , when we were near the end of the shop , he came back with a big , no , Huuuuugggee grin on his face . He said ' don't tell anyone yet  but i have just purchased my own aeroplane !!!! He the showed me a photo of the plane on his phone . It was like looking back at one of his motorbikes , as far as the colour scheme went . It was Yellow , with Green , Red , Silver and some White in it !! But apparently , this is the colour scheme of the Persian Air force .

The plane is a 1/70th scale version of  a Hawker Fury Biplane , of which you can read about here . The plane was built by a man called Graham , who took thirteen years to build her . And you can see why it took so long , as the quality of his workmanship shines in all aspects of the build .

Graham managed to fly the plane for a couple of years when it was completed . Sadly ill health stopped him flying it . And even more sad , Graham passed away after a long illness . The plane was stored in a dry hanger . The family wanted the plane to still fly , in Grahams memory . So for a few years , the owner of the hanger would fly the plane for them and also fly her into various airshows around the country . After a few years the Fury was parked up in the hanger . The wings were taken off and a rack , which looks like a wooden toast rack was made to store the wings .

Jump forward several years and my brother was looking through the classifieds in something like airplane trader , which would be the equivalent of the car Autotrader . He saw that the Fury was up for sale and at a reasonable price too . He said to his wife 'Look , I'm going to buy this plane , when i have sold the TVR '. Her reply was ' yes dear ' without moving her eyes away from reading 50 Shades Of Grey. He had said several times before that he wanted to buy a plane , but nothing had ever come of it for various reasons . One being that he was going to have a fellow pilot as a partner in owning a plane . But this guy always pulled out at the last minute . So why would his wife think this would be any different ??

The day of our Fathers funeral and we were having a drink to say goodbye to a wonderful man . My brother asked me if my Land Rover had a tow bar fitted . My reply being 'yes' . His eyes lit up and he said ' I have a little job for you Brian ' No my name isn't Brian . But this is a quote from a Monty Python film . He wanted my help in transporting the new Toy to it's new home .

Me being me thought that the plane would be going straight from one hanger to another . But i was wrong !!! It was going to sit on his drive at home . So he could replace all the perishable parts , such as tyres , hoses and  O rings . And get her back to how she was when last flown . So his thinking was that by having her at home , he didn't have to carry bags of spanners and other special kit , like Tea and a pack of Choccie Hobnobs all the way to another hanger . Only to find that he forgot to put milk in his coffee . Having the Fury at home , he could work on her as and when he wanted . Plus it would get up the nose of Mr Grumpy , one of his neighbours :-)

After being messed around by a few trailer hire companies . He finally had a date set for us to go down to collect the plane . I would drive to the hire place in the Landy  .He would join me in his hired white van . He would be a white van man for the day !! I left home just as the sparrows where letting out their first morning farts and made my way to Harlow . Brother arrived in his white vaaaaan and we went into the hire company . Only to be told the trailer wasn't at the branch yet and was on route !!! This was going to mess up our timings !! But we had no choice but to wait . So found somewhere for a coffee and returned to the hire place as the lorry arrived with the trailer on board . We both looked at each other and said ' I hope that isn't what they have sent for us !!!! He had ordered a 20' trailer and the lady on the other end of the phone had thought that a 2000kg trailer would be just right !!!! Being as it was just over 9' , we wouldn't even get half of the plane on the trailer . Now our day was really stuffed . No apology from the hire company assistant at the till . Just a 'sign eer for ya refund mate'  We had to make plans quick to get another trailer from somewhere . Alas , no one had anything available . So we decided to go down to collect just the wings in the vaaaan . A trip to Suffolk and frantic phone calls to the hanger owner to explain and say sorry that we couldn't collect the whole plane but would be taking just the wings .

We arrived and the family who were the owners of the plane were there to greet us . All was fine about leaving the fuselage where it was for a week , which was a great relief . We had a good chat with Grahams wife and his Daughter . We began to realise that Graham was a real character . This made me realise that the plane was going into the hands of someone else who is a real character !!!!

The wooden toast rack that holds the wings . They are suspended on straps to keep them apart .

After a chat we loaded the wings , in their wooden toast rack into the back of the vaaaan . Then it was the drive back to brothers place .
I nearly forgot !!! He had only told his wife that he had infact purchased a plane for real , the previous night !!!!

A week later we collected a trailer that was the correct size and not from the bunch of idiots who we had been to the week previous !!!
Another trip down to Suffolk to collect the fuselage with a 20' trailer behind my Landy !! I had only every towed my own trailer , which is about 4' long !! So this was a tad different and took a bit of adjusting taking tight corners and roundabouts . But i soon got the hang of it and couldn't even feel that i was towing a big old trailer . The Landy was showing what they are capable of :-) We arrived and had a chat with the hanger owner and then pushed the Fury onto the trailer . It was perfect . It fitted perfectly , so was ratchet strapped down . I took photos of the plane being strapped down and then some of the plane on the trailer , as brother wanted to document the move of his new Toy .
The journey home was interesting , in that it was the worst rain i had driven in for a number of years . And some of the roads we were driving on didn't have any lighting . But after several stops to make sure the straps were still in place, we arrived at my brothers house and unloaded the plane onto his drive . There was much ammusement from people driving past and a few comments from the local dog walkers . Which is hardly surprising , as it's not often that you see a 1/70th scale 1920's war plane on someones drive ;-) .

We covered the parts that we didn't want to get wet . Headed in for some food and a cup of tea . Then crashed into bed . Well i did but my brother sat up playing on his playstation for a few hours , shooting the enemy and blowing up enemy tanks and planes . He really hasn't grown up lol .

My brother had by now found a local hanger to store the plane once it was flyable . And the owners of the hanger were kind enough to let him store the wings in the hanger , in their wooden toast rack , for free . So when we woke up , had several mugs of coffee and a few slices of toast , it was back out to the Landy and loaded the wings onto the trailer for their trip to the hanger . This went as smooth as collecting the fuselage . Although i was a tad worried about some of the narrow lanes that we were having to drive to get to the hanger . I am sure that had a vehicle come in the other direction , i would still be there now trying to reverse this huge trailer back down narrow lanes :-)

Standing on the Landy to get a higher view .
 Strapping the Fury down .
Almost strapped down and ready for the off !!
Ready to go and the stormy clouds that would later lash down on us !!!
Another view of us ready to make the move .
Sepia toned this one to add a bit of the old look .
See , she fits just nicely on the drive :-)
Brother couldn't resist a sit in and make some brrrr and ratatat noises :-)
And to stop the elements getting in where its not wanted , the Fury has her own Gazeebo :-)

I will keep you posted as and when there are significant changes to the Fury  . And am looking forward to seeing her in flight again . We are hopeing to do some air to air photography whe she is all sorted and flying .

Hope you have enjoyed my little story . Sorry for the lack of blogs for a while , but have been busy with other things .

Baby and Family Portraits

I had the absolute pleasure of being commisioned to take baby Alana's first ever official portrait photos.  At 9 weeks of age she proved to be the perfect model, and was very patient while myself and her parents put her into lots of weird positions to get the best shots.

For the lighting I used my Elinchrom lighting, and my Lastolite HiLite illuminated background (you have studio lights placed in it to create the perfect white background without creases and shadows).
The only fun thing about the Hilite backgrounds are folding them away afterwards !!  Many a fun filled time has been spent perfecting the art of folding the 6ft x 7ft flexible structure away in its bag :)

Below are some of the shots I took over the hour I spent with Alana and her parents.  Some have been converted to black and white in Adobe Photoshop.

The next image was taken using natural light at the kitchen window and my Nikon 85mm portrait lens to throw the background sufficiently out of focus.  This super sharp lens is my latest purchase and I am very impressed so far with the results I am getting.

I hope you have enjoyed having a look at a different type of photography from my usual blogs.

Thanks for popping by,

Kind regards Mark

Appleby Horse Fair . A gathering of Gypsies and Travellers .

I am a frequent visitor to Cumbria and have wanted to go to this fair for a good number of year s now . I always seen to arrive in Cumbria too late or am up there the week before it is due to take place .

This last visit however was my lucky time to go up there . The Appleby fair was on during the last few days of my time away .   Anyone who has watched the Channel 4 show My big fat Gypsy Wedding will be familiar with the Fair as it has featured on the show.

For those of you who have not heard about this fair . It has been held in this lovely part of England for hundreds of years . It is an event held yearly and is attended by Romany and Irish families travelling to meet up with old friends, celebrate their music, history and folklore and conduct business - particularly buying and selling horses.  It is also visited by many visitors each year wanting to witness this unique event.

Traditionally the Gypsies and Travellers set up and stay on Fair Hill where they trade horses.  They run them on the surrounding public roads so they can display their skills to prospective buyers.  The younger members of the family wash the horses in the River Eden to get them ready to show to prospective buyers. In the evenings Fair Hill is alight with campfires. Sadly on my first visit , the river was far to high to safely take horses into the river for their wash and scrub . So it was down to the young members of the community to hang over the side of the river and collect buckets of water to shampoo the horses . They really do like to make these horses look at their best . I saw all sorts of posh shampoos and could smell Strawberry and other fruity shampoos being used .

I watched many of the horses being run along the streets and i was surprised at how fast they go along the roads , with people milling around at the same time . It really is a case of look over your shoulder , as they will not stop or even be able to stop if you step out in front of the horse . You can hear calls from the drivers of the carts that they use , shouting to mind your backs !!! But you need to watch your feet as well . As one poor soul found out when  a horse and cart went over his foot !!! ouch !!

The weather was really great for this day out . The week prior had been awful weather , rain and storms . But the sun was shining down on Appleby on this day . And as i was driving home at the end of my visit , it was apparent that it did shine just on Appleby . The surrounding area and all my journey back to Cumbria was dull and cloudy !!

While eating my lunch , i was watching a group of Gypsies doing a deal on a lovely horse . It is obviously a real tradition in the way they do these deals , as i couldn't make head nor tail of what was going on . But there was lots of hand slapping and money being passed from one man to another . I was really impressed that they have kept this tradition up for so many years .

Walking up to Fair Hill was interesting as there were some of the younger travellers in their new cars . Bentley Continental convertible and Porsche convertibles !!! I might think about doing a course on tarmac laying and block paving as it seems to pay well .

Their caravans are amazing.  All spotlessly clean and the ones with chrome parts were glistening in the sunshine .

There were fires lit nearby most of the caravans . Again this seems to be part of their tradition that they have a fire near by their homes .

I have heard from people that Travellers and Gypsies are nasty ignorant people . All i can say is that the ones i spoke to and bumped into were really polite and friendly . They seem to get a bad press . Which happens in all walks of life !!

This is where the horses normally get taken to be washed , to show them off at their shiny best .
Lovely Irish music being played . Was the first thing you heard as you came into the main street .
Horses tethered up for prospective buyers to view .
Fowl sticking close to mum . Was also still suckling from her as well .
Some of the carts are really well painted . This one had gilded gold on and really stood out .
They can get up some speed , as i said in the blog . You would not want to get hit by one at speed .
Bringing them in to go on sale up at Fair Hill . Think these were fairly wild as they were a bit on the jumpy side !!
After they have been shampooed , their feathers are rubbed with sawdust to make them all fluffy for the prospective buyers .
Traditional Caravans , highly painted and look so cosy . They all had little wood stoves in them and comfy looking beds . Whole families would have lived in these . I believe that some still carry on the tradition of living inside this style of Caravan .

Many thanks for popping by and hope you enjoyed the blog and photos that go with it . View more of my images on my website http://www.eternityimages.co.uk/Home.aspx

All the best , Mark .

Some more pics of the Kestrel Chicks .

I have been back a few times now to stand and stare at these wonderful chicks . I thought that there were only 2 of them . But today i went along with a friend (Keith , Holding Moments) and we reslised that there are infact 3 chicks !!!! One is very mobile and flying around the woodland . One is a fairly mobile one , but tends not to wander to far away . The last one is still a bit fluffy and looks fat . So i have called him ,Mark !! As thats how i feel a lot of the time , fat and fluffy lol .

While we were there today the parents came back several times with food for them . The first bit of food was a huge , and i mean huge Rat !! Sadly , the chick that had this went out of our view. We were just about to go back to mine for a coffe e and a natter , when the parent came back again with a big mouse . This time , Mark the fluffy one ate it right in front of us !! But had his back to us , so we didn't get to see the real gory bits !! But could see him ripping this mouse into bite size chunks and pulling the guts out and snacking on those as well !!

We decided to hang around for another ten minutes and it was worth it , as one of the others came back and sat with fluffy fat Mark . So we were able to get some images of the two together .

Then it was time to head home for a coffee . And for Keith and his friend to be licked to death by Mabel & Maya !! Mabel and Maya needed a walk , so when Keith and his friend had gone , i headed back over to have a wee look .

As i was walking round , i bumped into a walking buddy , who has a big Boxer , who Mabel loves and Maya was yet to meet . They all had a run around and i pointed out the Ketstrels to the owner of Ralfie . I know all the dogs name where i walk , but i don't know hardly any of the owners names !! Guess that shows i like dogs more than some people lol . As we walked past the allotments one of the adult Kestrels flew out of one of the overgrown allotments with a huge rat in its tallons !!! I had wondered where they were getting them from . An this makes sense , as these damn rats are eating everything that i am  growing on my plot . So the more that get taken by the family , the better it is in my opinion !!!  On the way back round one of the parents arrived with another big rat !! This was taken by one of the stronger chicks and taken away to a high branch where they devoured it in a matter of minutes , maybe 2 minutes !!!

As i had the dogs with me i didn't have my camera . But i did have my binoculars . Which are a pair of Leitz Trinovid 10x25 pocket binos . Thes are fabulous little bins . I was able to stand at a good distance and just watch all the goings on for a good half hr while Maya and Mabel amussed themselves in the long grass in the park .

I don't think it will be long before the stronger ones are away by themselves . But hopefully , Fluffy Fat Mark will be around for another week or so , so i can enjoy watching these wonderful birds .

Here are afew pics from today . Some are not that sharp as they were jumping around with the food . But you can see the bits n bobs of the mouse . So if you are a bit squeemish , please don't view the photos .

The large mouse or possibly a small rat .
Pulling its mid morning snack to pieces .

Sadly not very sharp , but shows the rat that has been delivered .
You can see the blood on the chest feathers where it has just eaten .

Once again , thanks for looking in . Please feel free to leave a comment or two and follow my blog .
